Bayswater residents are pretty spoilt for choice. Hyde Park is practically their back garden, which boasts lakes, sculptures and horse stables as well as excellent running and walking routes. Bayswater is comfortable yet cosmopolitan and it is a melting pot of different social and cultural mixes. This diversity is reflected in the different food shops and restaurants that run along Queensway, giving the area interesting contrasts. There is definitely a sense of community in Bayswater, with a local magazine keeping residents in the loop and there is an active resident’s association.

Bayswater is home to grand Georgian terraced houses with beautiful communal gardens, as well as more understated properties. The cottages around the area were built to give homes to railway works, during the industrialisation of Paddington. As the surrounding areas became more affluents, Bayswater’s landscape changed and became grander again, with pillared entrances to homes and stairways. Recently, many of these grand, high storey houses have been converted into flats.

Famous for housing London’s first and original department store Whiteley’s, Bayswater made its name for attracting Londoners to the area, bringing with them money and activity. Whitely’s is soon to be redeveloped today, many of the hotels are being renovated and converted into polished residential buildings. The mix of new developments and traditional stucco-fronted houses maintains the diversity that’s well loved and appreciated by locals.

The area has many local amenities, including a large Waitrose and a popular Gail’s Bakery, as well as independent artisan chocolatiers and cafes. Artisan du Chocolat and Cocomaya are local favourites. There are many lovely pubs, like The Mitre Townhouse, that in the summer are full of activity.
