Merstham is a well-connected village just north of Redhill, right on the edge of the Surrey Hills. The original part of the village, known as Old Merstham, has real character – think historic buildings, a 13th-century church, and a conservation area with a proper village feel. One of its most recognisable streets is Quality Street, named after J.M. Barrie’s 1902 play. The name pays tribute to actors Ellaline Terriss and Seymour Hicks, who starred in the original production and lived at The Old Forge at the end of the road.
The village has all the day-to-day essentials: a Co-op, local shops, pubs, cafés, takeaways, a community library, and an active village hall. For bigger shops, restaurants, and gyms, Redhill and Reigate are both a short drive away.
There’s plenty to do outdoors – the North Downs Way runs past the village, Mercers Country Park is nearby for paddleboarding and open water swimming, and there are loads of walking and cycling routes. Golfers have good local options too, including Reigate Hill, Bletchingley, and Woldingham. Racecourses like Lingfield and Epsom are also within easy reach.
Merstham station has direct trains to London Bridge, Victoria, and Gatwick, and the A23, M25 and M23 keep road connections simple.
Schools are well covered, with Lime Tree Primary and Merstham Park School in the village, plus a range of popular options nearby – including Reigate School, The Warwick, and independents like Reigate Grammar, Dunottar, and The Hawthorns.
